BrownMillerGroup Case Study: 32BJSEIU | New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania
Background: 32BJ SEIU is one of the nation’s largest labor unions representing over 163,000 members across the country. 32BJ is a national leader on progressive issues affecting working families and low-wage workers. Their support for legislation like the Fight for 15 and for progressive legislators makes them one of the most powerful organizations in the country.
We have worked in partnership with 32BJ SEIU many times over the years, on mail and digital campaigns in New York State, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Program: In 2013, we made every dollar count in a microtargeted mail campaign that helped elect Steve Fullop as the mayor of Jersey City. And in 2015, we worked across Philadelphia implementing a robust digital and mail program. The 32BJ slate was huge success, electing a new Mayor in Jim Kenney and reelecting Wilson Goode Jr., Kenyatta Johnson, and Maria Quinones-Sanchez to the City Council in very competitive races.
We were tapped again in 2015 to launch a digital advocacy program in New York State to kill an anti-worker bill in the State Senate. We blanketed our targeted district with pre-roll video and killed the bill at the end of session.
Most recently in 2016, we implemented mail programs in Baltimore and Montgomery County, Maryland. We continued our streak of important wins in Maryland electing Chris Van Hollen to the United States Senate, 3 new members of the Baltimore City Council, and helping 32BJ members organize to pass local minimum wage and fair scheduling laws.
Result: Whether the program is big or small, legislative or electoral, we help our progressive partners accomplish their goals. We look forward to continuing our advocacy with 32BJ and electing pro-labor advocates across the country.
